Archive for Citrus seed propagation

Misc.

Tonight I split a rex begonia that was over-growing and I got 5 plants out out one. I also split the spider plant, which had 3 crowns instead of one. I also put down some Peperomia leaves to see if I can get any babies.

I found an aphid on a plant. Devastating, I know. But appearantly if you have alot of houseplants you will see them eventually. So I went out and got a pint of Malathion, and mixed some up, and sprayed down my african violets. Take that, aphids!

I think thats it. I have baby cacti everywhere, so I will have plenty to sell and trade. And I am thinking of doing a dish garden, or a desert type box garden to mimic the natural enivoment of cacti and succulents.

The tangerine seeds are doing well, and I have baby trees. Im happy to see that they took off. And the coleus I grew from seed it thriving.. maybe my black thumb is turning brown.

I found cactus seeds!

I was at wal-mart today, and I found cactus seeds! I have been looking for these for a long time. This makes me *very* happy!

It has 11 different varieties, and it says germination is anywhere from 7-56 days. So, this will be an experiment, but for 97c a pack, I am not complaining. I know I can propagate from cuttings, so this will be a great test.

I have a baby tangerine tree downstairs now, the seeds are doing great. And the coleus is getting big and colorful, so I figure I will need to repot soon.

Tangerine Germination!

I searched in the pots and I found a few tangerine seeds had germinated!! That is so awesome, I had questioned if they really would or not.

Tossed out the christmas cactus I had put down because I could see it was *not* working. So I did the whole thing differently, I put cuttings in a very loose soil, and wet it down.

The philodendron cuttings arn’t looking so hot. I’ll have to see whats going on there.

Tangerine seeds planted

Last night I actually found a citrus at the grocery store that had seeds. It was a tangerine, and it had a good number in it. So I soaked the seeds to help leech out any growth inhibitor, and I planted them in small plastic pots in the green room. Im interested to see if I have any that germinate.

And here I thought plants were supposed to go dormant at this time of year, and everything is growing and doing great. Im still not fertilizing, to give everything a rest, but everything seems to be doing happy and green.

Cleaning and heating and lemons — oh my!

The heating in the green room is staying a steady 66F degrees. Humidity is still around 40%, but I’m gonna make sure the temp stabilizes before I worry about anything else. But everything is thriving, my spider plant and all my rex begonias have growth. I almost came home with some new succulents tonight, but I behaved myself. The AV leaf propogating tray was heated nicely tonight, I was happy about that. The heat lamps are working great.

The green room got a good cleaning today. I needed to do some watering but had to deal with some family issues, so I’ll do that tomorrow.

I read in one of my houseplant handbooks where you can start a houseplants from seeds from lemons or oranges. You won’t get any fruits, but the trees themselves make nice little houseplants. So at the grocery store tonight I bought 2 oranges and 2 lemons — different types of each. I know some are made seedless, so I figured I could see what variety had seeds.

They were ALL seedless.

And to boot I have alot of hangnails from the cold weather, and that lemon juice found EVERY SINGLE one of them.

I guess I’ll do some more research and see if any other stores carry different varieties. I want to try to see if I can grow houseplants myself, and I think that would be a good place to start.
